Q.SST & Offshore Fishing
What is a temperature break and why do fish stack on it?
A.
A temperature break is a line in the ocean where SST changes 2°F+ over a short distance, often aligned with current edges. Fish stack on breaks because they concentrate plankton and bait, create predictable thermal preferences (one side comfortable, the other not), and produce upwelling that brings nutrients up.
SST satellite imagery shows breaks as visible temperature gradients. Run trolling lines along the edge of the break, especially where it meets structure. SST threshold pages cover species preferences.
