Passes funnel enormous amounts of water through narrow channels. Outgoing tide at major passes (Boca Grande, Government Cut, Sebastian) creates the most concentrated baitfish flushes in inshore fishing — snook and tarpon stack at pass mouths to ambush.

On falling tide, fish stage at the flat edges and drain cuts. Optimal flat fishing is when there is enough water to cover the grass but not so much that fish disperse — typically the last two hours of incoming and first two of outgoing.

The strongest current — usually mid-incoming or mid-outgoing — produces the most pronounced shadow line and the most concentrated fish.
On rising tide, baitfish and shrimp work into the mangrove root structure. Snook and tarpon ambush from inside the roots. On falling tide, the same prey is flushed out at mangrove points and creek mouths — predators stage at these drains. Mangrove-edge fishing is more about the points and drains than the straight shoreline.
