Q.Freshwater Trout & Hatches

What is a spinner fall and how do I fish it?

A.

A spinner fall is the egg-laying stage of mayflies — adult females (spinners) drop to the water surface to deposit eggs and die, becoming spent and easy prey for trout. Spinner falls typically happen at dusk after the same day's hatch. Use rusty spinner or cdc spinner patterns matched to size of the day's hatch.

Spinner falls produce trout rises in the year's most concentrated 30-60 minute window because spinners are calorie-dense and helpless. Hatch calendar pages cover spinner-fall timing.
