Q.Freshwater Trout & Hatches

How do I know what insects are hatching?

A.

Catch one off the water surface with your hand or a fine-mesh net. Note size (compare to a hook gauge), color (top of body and underside), wing shape, and any distinguishing marks. Pair with the time of year and water temperature to identify the species. Local fly shops and hatch chart pages confirm.

Hatch calendar pages cover what's likely hatching at your timing on specific rivers — useful pre-trip planning.
