Cape Hatteras & Point Offshore SST guide.

Cape Hatteras Point is where the Gulf Stream comes closer to shore than anywhere else on the East Coast. Yellowfin tuna year-round, mahi and wahoo most of the year, and a winter bluefin tuna fishery make this one of the most consistent offshore destinations in the United States.

Temperature break patterns active in this zone

Persistent SST features that concentrate baitfish and predators. Use SST imagery to find the break, then fish the warm side.

  • Gulf Stream Western Wall

    5°F typical break

The boundary where the Gulf Stream's warm core meets cooler shelf water on its inshore side. Typically a 3–8°F break that runs from south to north along the East Coast. Bait stages on the cool side, predators hunt on the warm side. Read SST imagery to find the meanders that bring the wall closer to shore.

  • Hatteras Frontal Zone

    10°F typical break

Cape Hatteras is where cold Mid-Atlantic shelf water meets the warm Gulf Stream — the resulting front can show 8–12°F differentials in winter and is the engine behind the consistent year-round Hatteras tuna fishery.

Bield: Fish overlays NOAA CoastWatch SST imagery onto your navigation view, highlights temperature breaks within your target species' threshold band, and alerts you when your home zone hits the optimal window.

This page shows climatological SST patterns for planning purposes. Live SST imagery is available in the Bield: Fish app via NOAA CoastWatch — actual conditions vary year to year and verify before each trip.
