Q.Stocking & Trout Fishing

What is the difference between rainbow and brown trout for stocking programs?

A.

Rainbow trout are the most common stocking species — they grow fast in hatcheries, are easy to catch on standard tackle, and tolerate a wide range of stream conditions. Brown trout are stocked less frequently because they're harder to raise and more selective in the wild, but they survive and reproduce better than rainbows in many waters.

Some states stock both species in different waters depending on management goals. Stocking schedule pages cover species-specific releases.
