Yellowfin tuna typically swim in the upper 200 feet of water column, with most surface activity in the upper 100 feet. They dive deeper (sometimes 500+ feet) to feed on squid and bait but return to upper layers to digest and breathe. Trolling at 50-100 feet with weighted lines or downriggers reaches their core depth band.
