Sight fishing is the iconic cobia method — cruise channel edges and structure looking for fish following rays, turtles, or buoys. Cast bucktails or live eels. The Chesapeake Bay run (May–June) and the Gulf spring run are the two flagship cobia events of the year.

Conservation & regulation

Mixed — Atlantic Migratory Group stock has shown recent declines; Gulf stock more stable. Both managed under recovery-focused frameworks.

Temperature triggers

  • Preferred: 6882°F
  • Avoid below: 62°F
  • Avoid above: 86°F

Read the water temperature, not the calendar — fish move when the water hits these thresholds, not when the date does.

Primary baitfish

  • Crabs
  • Eels
  • Mullet
  • Menhaden
  • Pinfish

Predators follow prey. Track the bait — find the bait, find the cobia.

Regulation & sources

Atlantic stock managed by ASMFC and SAFMC; Gulf stock by GMFMC. Bag limits typically 1–2 per angler with 36-inch fork length minimum, but state rules vary substantially.

Track cobia arrivals on your coast.

Bield: Fish notifies you when water temperatures and bait movements line up for your home region — so you're on the water the day they show up, not the week after.
