Black Drum migration calendar.
Spring spawning aggregations in inlets, passes, and channel mouths concentrate big drum (40–80 lbs) for two to four weeks each year. Soak whole blue crab or clam on bottom with heavy gear. Smaller slot fish hold around oyster bars, deep channel edges, and grass flat drops year-round.
Stable in most ranges. Trophy fish (>50 lbs) are typically released — the meat quality declines significantly above slot size.

Temperature triggers
- Preferred: 60–78°F
- Avoid below: 50°F
- Avoid above: 84°F
Read the water temperature, not the calendar — fish move when the water hits these thresholds, not when the date does.
Primary baitfish
- Crabs
- Shrimp
- Clams
- Cut bait
Predators follow prey. Track the bait — find the bait, find the black drum.
Regulation & sources
State-specific bag and slot limits. Most states have slot windows that allow harvest of mid-size fish only — over-slot trophies are typically catch-and-release.
Track black drum arrivals on your coast.
Bield: Fish notifies you when water temperatures and bait movements line up for your home region — so you're on the water the day they show up, not the week after.
